ALDENTE WEB DESIGN MAC
Our first Al Dente Wall, Cheese, Please! inspired by mac ‘n cheese has been installed at the Pop Ups by Devika Kitchen Studio in Mumbai. This multisensory element lacks in the modern-day materials we use for building spaces. Spectators feel the urge to touch, sniff and interact with the wall. We use boxed pasta which is past its expiration date, and therefore would otherwise be thrown away. The use of an edible material such as pasta in architecture (due to its long life and durability) encourages conversation. We explored these patterns and created signature Al Dente Wall panels. Put together, the different types of pasta create mesmerizing, hypnotic patterns.
There have been design competitions, literature and talks about the various kinds of pasta. Design with Pastaįor over a decade now, several designers have been analyzing pasta, its form and structure. It was not only interactive but also photogenic. We upcycled 28,800 pieces of macaroni past its sell by date to create the world’s first and only ‘Al Dente Wall’. This contributes to the pressing issue of global food waste. However, it is often prepared in excessive portions that end up not being consumed. We can preserve pasta easily and manage it in domestic contexts. Cooked pasta, on the other hand, is the most wasted product among cooked food.
The least wasted product in domestic contexts is dry pasta. In 2013, LMM conducted a study on domestic waste in Italian households. Food waste represents one of the most significant social, economic, and environmental issues facing our planet. But, we build architecture for long-term survival. We prepare food for immediate consumption. A fundamental difference between food and architecture is their lifespans.
